This afternoon, Gustav will track across the western tip of Cuba, but this is not expected to interfere with the strength of the hurricane. Drenching rain of 6-12 inches will fall over western and central portions of the island as winds could exceed 120 mph. The storm surge could be greater than 15 feet near where the eye crosses the island. Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides could occur today.
By Sunday morning, Gustav is expected to be over the Gulf, reaching Category 4 status. Late Monday or early Tuesday, the dangerous hurricane will make landfall in the central Gulf coast. Flooding rain and strong winds will begin to lash the area on Monday as the storm approaches. Oil and natural gas operations in the Gulf will be impacted even sooner.
